About the Urban Family Collection

Joyce Urban鈥檚 love of Christmas began when she was a child in the city of Philadelphia. Every year she would go see the elaborate decorations at the department stores that were set up along the path she walked as she went to see Santa. This wonder of Christmas has stayed with her through the years. She began publicly displaying her collection in 1989 because she wanted to provide a place for children of all ages to experience the holiday magic she enjoyed as a child. Over the years her Christmas Tour has raised money for many local charities including Harvest International, Interfaith, Pilot Club, Women鈥檚 Pregnancy Center and the Counseling Resource Center where she once worked as a counselor. In 2012 Joyce opened Urban Counseling where she continues her legacy of helping others.

CF Appleton Museum of Art to Open Show of Botanical Paintings by Susan Martin

完美体育 artist Susan Martin鈥檚 photorealistic canvasses explore the botanical world by concentrating on small portions of plant life. Her explorations, in exquisite detail, are influenced by the photographs of Russell Lee, of whom she was a prot茅g茅. Lee鈥檚 lasting influence can be observed in her sharp, clean examination of the subject, her preference for strong contrast that reveals surface quality and detail, and an emphasis on composition that comes from years of work in black and white.

Martin, who works out of her home studio on south Merritt Island, was raised in Texas. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin, and then continued coursework in art education and art history. A significant part of her educational experience was the opportunity to study photography and composition under the eminent photographer Russell Lee.

Early in her career, the artist turned to acrylics in her quest for the clean edges that a quick drying medium can deliver, adding depth of color through multiple layers of paint. Her work developed 鈥渟uper-real鈥 characteristics, creating an image beyond the scope of the camera.

Appleton Museum to Open Exhibition of Art Nouveau by Alphonse Mucha

The 75 piece 鈥淎lphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau,鈥 exhibition will be on view Nov. 6, 2021-Jan. 9, 2022. Selected from The Dhawan Collection in Los Angeles, it is one of the finest private collections of Alphonse Mucha鈥檚 work in the United States. Mucha is most often remembered for the prominent role he played in shaping the aesthetics of French Art Nouveau at the turn of the 20th century.

Included in the exhibition are rare original lithographs and proofs, an oil painting, drawings, a pastel, and books, posters, portfolios and ephemera. The exhibition is curated by esteemed art historian Gabriel Weisberg, professor of Art History, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, who has provided an essay for the exhibition catalog. Weisberg writes, 鈥淚n 1900, when the widely distributed French periodical Art et D茅coration published a long and exhaustive article on the work of Alphonse Mucha (1860鈥1939), the Czechoslovakian artist was at the pinnacle of his creative powers. Varied, expressive, and seductive, his works were given the name 鈥渢he Mucha style鈥; later the style was identified as 鈥淎rt Nouveau.鈥

Mucha鈥檚 successes in many fields of creativity are revealed in the exhibition, dedicated to the broad range of his work. The exhibition focuses on posters, book and journal illustrations, the Slav Epic canvases, and the ways Mucha revitalized an interest in these media. 聽It provides an opportunity to see how the different media, clients and objectives reflect the time period in which the artist lived and worked.

鈥淢ucha鈥檚 ability to understand the major creative themes of the day, to use them in the most original ways possible, and to create works of art that remain seductive for future generations, is truly his great triumph,鈥 said Weisberg. With objects drawn from the extensive Dhawan Collection, and with the publication of this catalog, the exhibition provides a new, original way of seeing one of the most prolific creators of fin-de-si猫cle imagery.

The exhibition and museum tour were organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles.
