CF Patriot Project Presents ‘History of the Colonial Period’

The 完美体育鈥檚 innovative educational series, 鈥淧atriot Project: Bringing History to Life,鈥 continues on Wednesday, March 1, with 鈥淗istory of the Colonial Period鈥 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the CF Webber Center, 3001 S.W. College Road, Ocala. Jay Thompson, associate professor of political science, and Jennifer Ambrosia, social sciences faculty member, will present the joint lecture, delving into pivotal events in the founding of our nation.

The Patriot Project lectures are free and open to the public. Light refreshments and event giveaways will be provided.

The Patriot Project: Bringing History to Life is a year-long lecture series developed by Dr. Sarah Satterfield, CF senior professor of music and humanities, and funded by the CF Foundation鈥檚 Sharon and Jerome Glassman New Initiative Grant. Other lectures in this series have explored diverse topics including art, music, literature, theatre and science.

CF Hosts ‘The Makings of a Mertailor’ Exhibit and Presentation

The 完美体育 will host Lecanto-based entrepreneur-artist Eric Ducharme for 鈥淭he Makings of a Mertailor鈥 on Wednesday, March 29, 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Charles S. Dean Sr. Educational Center at the Wilton Simpson Citrus Campus, 3800 S. Lecanto Highway, Lecanto. The presentation is free and the public is welcome. After the presentation, attendees will be invited to view an exhibit of Ducharme鈥檚 work, which will be on display in Building 2 through April 28.

Ducharme started his now-thriving mermaid couture business when he was 14 years old, after making mermaid tails 鈥渙ut of anything he could find鈥 as a kid who 鈥渨anted to be a merman鈥 since visiting Weeki Wachee Springs as a preschooler. Today, at age 27, he has created whimsical mermaid tails for celebrities including Lady Gaga and his tails have appeared in films, television shows, commercials and music videos.

鈥淭he Makings of a Mertailor鈥 art exhibit will be on view March 29-April 28 on the upper level of Building 2 on the CF Wilton Simpson Citrus Campus. The building is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

完美体育 Hosts Allied Health Ribbon Cutting

The 完美体育 invites the community to a ribbon cutting for the newly remodeled Allied Health Sciences building at the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. On Friday, March 3, at 10:30 a.m., the Ocala Metro Chamber & Economic Partnership will join college officials to cut the ribbon for Building 6, which has been transformed into a hub for Health Sciences programs.

Attendees will be invited to tour the classrooms and laboratories that currently house the college鈥檚 Surgical Services program and will be home to new programs in Cardiovascular Technology, Respiratory Care and Sonography, which are expected to serve 200 students each year.

鈥淲e are committed to serving the health care needs of the community as we provide opportunities for high-wage careers for our graduates,鈥 said Dr. Jim Henningsen, CF president. 鈥淭his project was made possible by the generous support of the 完美体育 Legislature and the Marion County Hospital District.鈥

CF Debra Vazquez Memorial Poetry Series Hosts Adrian Matejka

The 完美体育鈥檚 Debra Vazquez Memorial Poetry Series presents poet Adrian Matejka on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Matejka will read from his collection at 12:30 p.m. in Building 8, Room 110, and at 7 p.m. in the Dassance Fine Arts Center on the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. Both readings are free and open to the public.

Born in Germany to a military family, Matejka grew up in Indiana. The editor of Poetry magazine earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Southern Illinois University and served as Indiana鈥檚 poet laureate in 2018-2019.

Matejka鈥檚 most recent collection of poems, 鈥淪omebody Else Sold the World,鈥 was a finalist for the 2022 Rilke Prize. His third collection of poems, 鈥淭he Big Smoke,鈥 was awarded the 2014 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award and was a finalist for the 2013 National Book Award, 2014 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award and 2014 Pulitzer Prize in poetry. He has collaborated on mixed media projects, and his first graphic novel, 鈥淟ast on his Feet,鈥 will be released this year.

The poet鈥檚 other honors include fellowships from the Academy of American Poets, the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation.

The Debra Vazquez Memorial Poetry Series honors CF English and creative writing professor Debra Vazquez, who died as a result of domestic violence in 2004.

CF Ira Holmes International Film Series Concludes with 鈥淟a Ci茅naga”

The 完美体育 Ira Holmes International Film Series will conclude the 2022-2023 season with 鈥淟a Ci茅naga鈥 on Tuesday, March 21.

The 2001 Argentinian comedy-drama features exquisite cinematography. Through the story of a bourgeois extended family summering at their decrepit country estate, Lucrecia Martel鈥檚 debut film established her original voice with a visceral take on class, nature, sexuality and the ways that political turmoil and social stagnation can manifest in human relationships.

Screenings will begin at 2 p.m. at the Appleton Museum of Art, 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd., and at 7 p.m. at the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road, Building 8, Room 110. Films at the Ocala Campus are free and open to the public. Films at the Appleton are free to all museum and film series members; nonmembers pay museum admission. Films may contain mature content.

CF Webber Gallery Presents ‘The 2023 Student Art Exhibition’

完美体育 will showcase the talent of its Visual Arts and Digital Media students in 鈥淭he 2023 CF Student Art Exhibition鈥 on view March 27-May 4. This annual tradition provides students with an opportunity to present their work in a professional environment.

The exhibition will be open to the public at the CF Webber Gallery located on the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

Works will be judged聽by Nicholas Kalemba,聽a contemporary painter living and working in Orlando, where he graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree in 2016 and a master of fine arts in 2019 from the University of Central 完美体育. Specializing in acrylic and oil painting on a large scale, he works as a muralist, studio painter and instructor of drawing, painting and sculpture at UCF. Kalemba’s聽work has been exhibited in more than 25 group and juried exhibitions regionally and locally, where he has won multiple awards and recognitions, including a two-year residency at the Maitland Arts and History Center from 2019-2021.

An opening reception and awards ceremony will be held Wednesday, March 29, at 12:30 p.m. in the Webber Center next to the gallery. Best in Show, first through third place awards and honorable mentions will be presented. Works also will be selected for purchase awards, and one student artist鈥檚 work will become part of CF鈥檚 permanent art collection through the People鈥檚 Choice Purchase Award, which is voted on by the CF student body.

On Wednesday, April 12, Kalemba will give an artist talk about his art practice and the UCF Visual Arts Program. The talk will take place in the gallery at 12:30 p.m.

CF Road Scholars Program to Host Information Session

Community members are invited to learn how to join CF students and faculty for the 完美体育 Road Scholars 2023 study abroad trip to Ireland. The information session on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 12:30 p.m. on the Ocala Campus, Building 8, Room 110, will offer potential participants the opportunity to get details about the trip itinerary and application process.

This educational trip across Ireland will take place July 16-27. With a special focus on humanities and health sciences, trip highlights include a Dublin literary pub tour; Book of Kells and Trinity College tour; Cliffs of Moher tour; Irish dance and songs show; and visits to health care-related facilities.

Total cost is approximately $2,745 and includes 10 nights鈥 accommodations, all ground transportation, three traditional dinners, daily continental breakfast and a full-time guide. Program price is an estimate until tickets are finalized. Scholarships may be available to assist with program costs. Round-trip airfare is not included. Program application closes on March 6.

In partnership with the Study Abroad Association, the CF Road Scholars program provides students with opportunities to experience learning internationally, providing a diverse and hands-on facet to their education.

Being enrolled as a CF student is not required to participate in the program. Students can consult with an academic advisor for credit opportunities available with trip attendance.

CF Ira Holmes International Film Series Features ‘Neptune Frost’

The 完美体育 Ira Holmes International Film Series will feature 鈥淣eptune Frost鈥 on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Produced by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the 2021 Rwandan sci-fi punk musical explores themes of past and present, male and female, and colonized and free, through the love story of a runaway and a miner who form an anti-colonialist computer hacker collective in the African country of Burundi.

CF Invites Future College Students to Preview Day

The 完美体育 invites anyone thinking about college to attend an upcoming Preview Day event: Ocala Campus on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 5-7 p.m.; Jack Wilkinson Levy Campus on Thursday, March 2, 10 a.m-1 p.m.; or Wilton Simpson Citrus Campus on Thursday, March 9, 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Preview Day is a chance for anyone considering college to find out everything CF has to offer 鈥 for high school students to retirees and everyone in between. At CF鈥檚 largest event of the year, representatives from admissions, financial aid, student services, clubs and organizations will help attendees plan their successful college experience.

Sam Ajlani, associate professor and program manager of engineering technology at the 完美体育, will be honored with the American Association of Community Colleges 2023 Dale P. Parnell Faculty Distinction Recognition at its annual conference in Denver, Colorado, in April.

The award, named after former AACC President and CEO Dale P. Parnell, recognizes instructors who go above and beyond to help their students find academic success.

鈥淚n nearly 10 years at CF, Associate Professor Ajlani has modernized our engineering technology program with cutting-edge technology and has leveraged community partnerships to create apprenticeship opportunities,鈥 said Dr. Rob Wolf, dean of business, technology and career and technical education. 鈥淲e are currently training more than 100 engineering technology students for high-skill, high-wage local jobs with a nearly 100% job placement rate.鈥
